Grab Celebrates 1st Anniversary in Kuching

Grab, the leading online-to-offline mobile platform in Southeast Asia officially launched its first driver centre in Kuching to mark its 1st anniversary. The new Grab Driver Centre will serve as a one-stop support centre to cater to the needs and welfare of current and potential driver-partners.

Ride-hailing services are crucial to Southeast Asia's infrastructure. Grab has recorded over 109 million mobile downloads and currently serves 235 cities across 8 countries in Southeast Asia with millions of driver-partners relying on Grab as a source of income. And in Malaysia, Grab is currently present in more than 30 major cities and towns across every state and federal territory.

“Our driver-partners, be it GrabCar or GrabTaxi drivers play a critical role in helping us serve our users here in Kuching and the neighbouring cities, and we are committed to improve their welfare by ensuring our platform is even more sustainable and rewarding. The new Grab Driver Centre here is a testament to that and puts their needs and welfare as our driver-partners at the forefront of our business,” said Grab Malaysia’s Head of Outer Cities, Justin Tiew.

The new Driver Centre represents Grab’s commitment to a better driver-partner experience, providing the necessary training for a seamless journey benefiting both drivers and passengers. Some of the key services facilitated at the Grab Driver Centre are:
Ongoing Queries: Managing the daily queries by both current and potential drivers.
Driver Registration and Screening: Managing new driver registration, mandatory in-person verification.
Education and Training: Conducting mandatory driver training and re-education sessions for all drivers.

Therefore, to mark the first anniversary of Grab in Kuching, Grab also held a special luncheon to acknowledge some of their top driver-partners in Kuching. As part of the event, Grab recognised 30 of their top performing drivers and presented them with a Grab light. These drivers are selected based on their overall performance, rating and feedback from their passengers.

Corinne Chin, one of the drivers who was present shared how she began driving with Grab. “I used to run my own business, and was driving part-time. Grab enabled me to earn additional income, especially when business wasn’t doing well. Soon, I realised driving full time with Grab was more lucrative than running my own business.” As a single mother of two children, she adds that being a Grab driver gave her more time to be with her family.

In addition, M. Ahmad Saani, one of the many hundreds of taxi drivers who are on the Grab platform, shared that the service was not only convenient for users but also for drivers. Saani comments that, “The biggest difference Grab has made is that it is now much easier to get a job compared to the early days of driving around searching for customers. Previously, we had to wait at taxi stands for hours or get flagged down abruptly while driving. Now we are really able to see the rewards from the amount of hours and effort we put in everyday.”

In addition to recognising their top drivers, over the year, Grab has also organised various initiatives to celebrate their driver-partners such as organising a car-wash programme and a Sesi Berbuka Puasa to celebrate their hard efforts during Ramadhan.

Moving forward, Grab together with Petronas will also be setting up Grab Driver Pit Stops in select locations around Kuching for drivers to recharge themselves in between rides and work with the Employee Provision Fund to set up counters for drivers to register themselves.
Adding to the fanfare, Grab is also offering an exclusive promo code for passengers to enjoy. Passengers only need to key in GRABTURNS1 to enjoy RM5 off 2 rides. Promo code is valid only on October 30th for rides paid via GrabPay (card or GrabPay Credits) in conjunction with Grab’s 1st anniversary in Kuching.

“But the great news doesn’t stop here!” said Tiew excitedly. “We are also proud to announce that we are working to further improve our coverage in Kota Padawan, Kota Sentosa, Bau and Siniawan, to deliver a seamless ride experience to the hundreds of thousands Grab users in this region,” he added.
