Consumers today need their smartphones to do it all – from immortalizing precious memories on camera, expressing themselves through shareable content all day and night, streaming the latest shows, to making bold fashion statements. Combining these needs into a power-packed mobile experience, Samsung has delivered a new epic standard for premium smartphones in the form of the Galaxy S22 series.
Yet, with the myriad of smartphone options out there, it is no wonder that users would have many considerations when it comes to choosing their next device.
To help users understand more about the S22 series, we rounded up top questions from the regional Samsung community, including Galaxy fans on Samsung Members, Gen Z employees from our Future Generation Lab team, and the media.
We then sat down with Carl Nordenberg, Regional Head of Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania, who addressed these burning questions and shared some interesting insights about the S22 series. Read on to find out more.
Q: Between the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra, how can we choose the most suitable phone for ourselves? Why should I upgrade?
The first thing I will do is to ask: What exactly do you need from your smartphone?
Galaxy S22 Ultra was designed for those who need a phone that helps them do it all. It is the ultimate premium device with the most powerful performance and professional features available on a smartphone. And, of course, the S22 Ultra comes with the embedded S Pen, which is a useful tool for those who are productivity-focused.
If you’re looking for a device that fuels creativity and self-expression with pro-grade AI camera features, the Galaxy S22 or S22+ could be the right device for you. The S22 and S22+ deliver our best camera experiences yet, and offer great performance across all use cases, in a striking and refined design. Between the S22 and S22+, you can further narrow down your choice based on phone and display size – that is, whether you prefer the S22’s 6.1-inch display or the S22+’s 6.6-inch display – and in general, what feels best to you!
Q: Aside from Nightography, can you share one lesser-known feature of the Galaxy S22 series?
We look very closely into better social media integration and how we can enhance the Galaxy mobile experience for consumers. For many of our users today – especially the Gen Zs and young millennials – smartphones are central to their daily lives and social media are key platforms for connecting with the world. Increasingly, our users want to be able to express themselves through photos and videos in particular, and then share their creations quickly on their favourite social channels. Our S22 series cameras seamlessly integrate with TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, so the best Samsung camera features are readily available on these social platforms.
Q: The Galaxy S22 series features a refreshing color palette! How does Samsung go about making the choices on the color variants for the devices? What is your favourite?
The Samsung design team goes through a very robust color selection process that spans from color concept definition to color selection and post-launch review. We work closely with internal teams as well as global experts in color trends to gather insights on consumer preferences. Based on the research, the team then develops a color pool to narrow down the options for final selection. The selected color options are the result of numerous surveys, including with our Gen Z and millennial employees, to ensure that we can offer choices that resonate with all consumers.
For me, the S22 Ultra in Burgundy is a unique, elegant and premium option that tops my list!
Q: What are the reasons behind the decision to include a built-in S Pen on the Galaxy S22 Ultra? Does this mean Samsung will stop releasing the Galaxy Note series?
The S22 Ultra seeks to bring the best of the S and Note series together. That means taking fan-favorite aspects of the Note series – the built-in S Pen, large display, and best-in-class performance – and merging it with the creative capabilities of the S series to give users our most powerful Ultra yet.
Over the past year, we have been increasing S Pen compatibility within the Galaxy ecosystem, from smartphones, tablets, to even PCs. Providing the embedded S Pen for S22 Ultra was the natural next step, and something that our Note fans are very excited about!
Q: Do you have any apps to recommend for creators who are looking to utilize the S Pen on the S22 Ultra?
My go-to app is Samsung Notes, which seamlessly translates my poor (sometimes illegible) handwriting to text, while allowing me to create memos and task lists easily. For creators, we have PenUp, a sketching and coloring app that provides many options to draw and create art, and is easy to use for any user, from beginners to seasoned artists. The app also maximizes the benefits of the S Pen by recognizing the level of pressure you apply – just like with an actual pencil or paintbrush on paper.
Q: Any tips on how we can utilize Nightography on the Galaxy S22 series to the fullest? Why did Samsung decide to focus on this as a key feature?
While speaking to our younger users to understand how they use their phones, we realized just how important their smartphone cameras have become, not just to capture meaningful moments, but also as an important tool to help them creatively express themselves daily. We know that the best and most exciting parts of the day are often at night, and our users want to capture, create, and share photos and videos with the same level of quality and detail even when it’s dark. Thus, we designed the Galaxy camera to capture more light, more motion and more detail than ever before, opening up a whole new world of low-light content capture opportunities.
There are so many different possibilities when it comes to Nightography, so I will encourage you to spend some time and play with all the options and features available in order to discover what best suits your needs! For example, the ‘Night’ mode would come in handy when you start taking photos in low light, including low-light portraits and self-portraits. Meanwhile, Auto Frame Rate helps your videos get optimal lighting exposure, even with low light. With some practice, you should be able to make full use of the Nightography features in no time.
Q: How are Galaxy fans reacting to the Galaxy S22 series? Do you expect the devices to be popular?
The consumer response to the S22 series has been tremendous. We have seen unprecedented demand across many markets globally, and particularly in our region, with pre-orders greatly exceeding our expectations. In some markets here, pre-orders have more than doubled compared to the S21 series! We have also been receiving a lot of positive feedback from our local market launches, and we are excited to bring these amazing phones and powerful new experiences to both loyal and new Galaxy customers all across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
