Educators show dedication to supporting the teaching and learning of the students despite the pandemic, and their effort was paid off when six Malaysian students received offers of admission to the Harvard College Class of 2026.
Among them is Ishant Shah Atul Kumar, a Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) student from Sunway College Kuala Lumpur. A Sunway Sports Scholarship recipient, Ishant who is from Penang, attended SMK Bukit Jambul and is a national squash player who is actively involved in community service work.
Having been involved in squash since young, Ishant has participated in various competitions and activities during his time in Sunway, including winning in the CIMB Foundation National Junior Championship 2022.
“We could not be prouder of Ishant and his acceptance into Harvard. I’m sure that he and his family are incredibly proud of this, as well as all his other achievements,” shared Heath Kondro, the Director of CIMP Programme at Sunway College.
“In Sunway CIMP, we prepare students for life-long success by emphasising the balance of academics with activities outside of the classroom. We hope that during Ishant’s time in CIMP, he has strengthened skills such as leadership, initiative and problem-solving that will benefit him in his future pursuits.”
This year recorded the highest number of students from Malaysia admitted in the same year to Harvard’s undergraduate school throughout the county’s history, these Malaysian students went through stiff competition with over 60,000 global applicants for the Class of 2026, and only 3.19% students were accepted.
Harvard College is also offering financial aid to students – eliminating all tuition, room, board, and fee costs for students from families with annual income below USD$75,000, regardless of citizenship or nationality.
Following the footsteps of numerous Sunway College alumni including Jarell Cheong, Nathaniel Tan and Jacintha Tagal, Ishant adds to the list of students from Sunway College who further their studies at the world’s prestigious institution.
Dr Cheng Mien Wee, Director of Pre-University Studies at Sunway College, also congratulated and commended Ishant on his achievements. She added, “Ishant’s pursuit of excellence in studies and sports is inspiring! Ishant has shone the way for more young Malaysians to follow.”
This year, the six students coming from varied backgrounds all across the country, will represent Malaysia at Harvard, achieving their goals with the abundant resources available.
