SUNWAY COLLEGE IPOH AND SUNWAY UNIVERSITY LAUNCH ACTUARIAL STUDIES TWINNING PROGRAMME WITH AN INAUGURAL BURSARY OF UP TO RM10,000

Sunway College Ipoh (SCI) is launching a new three-year twinning programme in collaboration with Sunway University, offering a QS 5-Stars ranked Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Actuarial Studies this October with an inaugural bursary of up to RM10,000*.

This collaboration will enable students to ease into the first year of their studies in SCI and subsequently continue their second and third year of studies in Sunway University. The course also offers each first intake student an inaugural bursary of RM10,000 tuition fee waivers for their first year of studies in Ipoh.

Established in 2003, SCI is located in a progressive 1,350 acres integrated resort township in Tambun, Ipoh. It is well equipped with academic and hostel facilities, offering quality learning with the convenience of amenities in a vibrant city located just a few kilometres away.

“We hope that this will be the first in a series of other twinning programmes to be offered by Sunway University in Ipoh as well as other regions of Malaysia, bringing quality university education to their doorstep,” shared Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University.

The actuarial studies programme offered under the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), Sunway University is taught by qualified and experienced academics and industry experts to ensure students are fully equipped for a financially rewarding career.

“Our actuarial studies programme at Sunway has achieved the QS 5-Stars rating under the programme strength category, where it identifies an institution’s specialist programme by looking at its competitiveness and strength in all areas, from student application right through to the graduate employment rate,” said Professor Ho Chee Kit, Dean of SMS, Sunway University.

“Students are also taught by our in-house actuaries with a lot of industry experience teaching in the programme. Our academics, together with the two in-house actuaries, ensure that our programme syllabus is closely aligned with the industry needs.”

The programme is fully accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), UK where students can be exempted from up to six out of 13 professional examinations required to qualify as an actuary.

Students also have the opportunity to join the Actuarial Practice Course (APC), a three-month course conducted by in-house actuaries. It is designed to prepare actuarial students to be employment-ready and incorporates the feedback from industry practitioners in the course design. This course also covers several topics with practical assignments, including long-term reserve, long-term pricing and International Financial Reporting Standard 17 (IFRS 17).

The results from the School of Mathematical Sciences graduate tracer study indicate that Sunway actuarial studies graduates have a track record of 100% employment in actuarial-related positions.
