Canon Marketing Malaysia (“Canon”) has once again been awarded with 'Company of The Year’ for the fifth consecutive year since 2018 and brought back its first ever 'Long-Standing Excellence in Sustainability', in recognition of Canon's well-established commitment to CSR and sustainability initiatives.
The prestigious awards acknowledge the company's dedication in carrying out valuable CSR initiatives that have a positive impact on the lives of local communities, and its proactive involvement in sustainability efforts in the endeavour of a better Malaysia. This marks yet another notable achievement for Canon, the global leader in the market for photographic and digital imaging solutions.
The Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2022 is organised by CSR Malaysia, a publication and social initiative under the auspices of the Pertubuhan Amal Tanggungjawab Kemapanan Dan Korporat Malaysia (a national body for Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility). YBhg Dato’ Ramlan Bin Harun, Secretary General of the Ministry of Rural Development, officiated the event held at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur on 18 August 2022.
"I’m greatly humbled by Canon’s double-award win, which has only been possible thanks to the dedication and commitment of all our employees. Balancing business growth with commitment to the environment is a key attribute to Canon's success today, as well as the cornerstone of all our future activities and policies. We have done various environmental and social initiatives over the past 35 years since our establishment in Malaysia, and are constantly strengthening our company policies in terms of governance. We aspire to work hand-in-hand with local communities to create avenues of positive impact nationwide”, said Julia Cheah, Human Resources and General Affairs Director of Canon Marketing Malaysia.
This event honours organisations who have taken the initiatives to conduct Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to create positive socio-economic impact in Malaysia. These programmes range from supporting underrepresented communities to preserving environmental efforts. A distinguished panel of judges assessed the award winners based on several criteria; such as the alignment of the company's practices with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) benchmarked by the United Nations and the impact of the CSR activity.
As a global leader in digital imaging solutions, Canon has always endeavoured to use ‘Imaging for Good’. The company received the two awards this year based on Canon’s CSR activities conducted in 2021. One Canon One Tree is the company’s annual tree planting event to contribute to a greener environment. Since 2016, more than 8,000 trees have been planted including 511 trees planted as a food source for the endangered Malayan Tapir.
Under the Canon Young Readers Programme, Canon has donated more than 200 books to underprivileged children, encouraging youngsters to read. Last year, the programme supported the printing and promotion of a book on children’s body safety. Humanitarian and disaster relief efforts such as food aid which supported 500 families nationwide during the pandemic and distribution of essential supplies to the affected individuals and families during the flood were also carried out to help ease the burden of these communities. These are just some of the many initiatives Canon has conducted in adherence to its deeply rooted corporate philosophy of ‘Kyosei’, which encapsulates the international standards in the field of ESG.
Other CSR initiatives by Canon include annual International Women's Day campaigns which emphasise on gender equality, financial aid for students at UOW Malaysia KDU to provide equal opportunity for quality education and various photography, videography and printing workshops that benefit underserved communities.
Shunji Yoshikai, President and CEO of Canon Marketing Malaysia, added “At Canon, our company philosophy "Kyosei”, serves as the foundation for all that we do. It covers more ground than just the solid bonds we've built with our partners; it also pertains to how we behave in connection to society and the environment generally. Living in harmony with society and the environment, as well as cooperating for the common good, has long been the foundation of Canon's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) footprints”.
Canon remains steadfast in its commitment to give back to the community and looks forward to extending its efforts on new CSR opportunities that will help support Malaysia's environmental and social development. Guided by its Kyosei philosophy, Canon places a strong focus on its duties to improve both the environment and society in addition to its endeavour to further the innovations of digital imaging solutions.
