Students in Selangor get free haircuts, thanks to MR D.I.Y.

For some Malaysians, even getting a haircut is a luxury these days.  With prices rising and putting a strain on wallets, it is nice to get a freebie once in a while, just to lighten the load and give a lift to the spirits.

Recognising this, Malaysia’s favourite home improvement retailer MR D.I.Y. recently stepped up with an unusual offer for students in Selangor – a free haircut!  Over 300 students enjoyed the treat under the retailer’s ‘Program Gunting Rambut’ initiative, part of its efforts to promote greater awareness of better personal hygiene.

The programme was a joint initiative between the retailer, the Joint Management Body [JMB] Pangsapuri Sri Bakawali, Bukit Sentosa, Rawang, Pusat Tuisyen Sinaran Impian and Pertubuhan Penggerak Komuniti Impian in Seri Kembangan.

Commenting on the initiative, MR D.I.Y. Group Chairman, Dato’ Azlam Shah Alias, said, “When times are challenging, everybody needs a little lift to the spirits.  Some of us have the privilege of going  to the barber or salon monthly to get a haircut or getting our hair done professionally; however many don’t. Yet a good haircut can do wonders for the spirit and confidence.  Which is why we developed this ‘Program Gunting Rambut’.  It is a perfect way to bring some cheer to the community, while at the same time building safer, healthier communities by promoting better personal hygiene.  It’s a simple, fun, programme that benefits everyone!”

The programme was run in two sessions.  In the first session, 20 volunteers from MR D.I.Y. and ten hairdressers from GIATMARA Ampang Jaya, DMZ Salon & Barber Academy and Eunoia Professional Hair Studio provided haircuts to 100 students from Pangsapuri Sri Bakawali, Bukit Sentosa, Rawang.  The second session saw 200 students from the Seri Kembangan area benefiting from haircuts jointly coordinated by 23 volunteers from MR D.I.Y and12 hairdressers from GIATMARA Ampang Jaya.

To add to the excitement of the event, the retailer also set-up a STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] “Activity Zone”  featuring learning activities for the students and their parents.
