MERDEKA 118 TOWER FIRST MEGA-TALL BUILDING IN MALAYSIA TO RECEIVE LEED PLATINUM CERTIFICATION

The Merdeka 118 tower project has been awarded the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification in the LEED v2009 Core & Shell rating system, marking it as the first mega-tall building in Malaysia to attain such a distinction.

LEED certification acknowledges a project's compliance with the criteria outlined in the LEED rating system, established and upheld by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The certification programme is overseen by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).

PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad (PNBMV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, is the owner of and builder of Merdeka 118. Standing at a height of 678.9 metres high, Merdeka 118  is the tallest tower in Southeast Asia and the second tallest in the world.

PNBMV Chief Executive Officer Tengku Dato’ Ab. Aziz Tengku Mahmud said that the LEED Platinum certification marks the first milestone in Merdeka 118's journey to become Malaysia's first triple-green platinum rated mega-tall building.

“Once Merdeka 118 tower receives all its platinum certifications, it will set the highest sustainability standards not only in Malaysia but also internationally, reinforcing its iconic status,” he said.

Merdeka 118 is targeting Platinum certification from Green Real Estate (GreenRE) and Green Building Index (GBI). It is also in line to  obtain WELL certification from the International WELL Building Institute Asia Pacific supporting the wellbeing of the tenants and the wider community.

Tengku Dato’ Ab. Aziz said the USGBC assessed the Merdeka 118 project in the areas of sustainability of the site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Credits were also given to water efficient landscaping, water use reduction, optimized energy performance, and enhanced commissioning.

“This well-deserved recognition is proof of the team's dedication and hard work and the use of best practices in design and construction,” he said.

Spanning over 3.1 million square feet of gross floor area, the Merdeka 118 tower comprises 84 floors of Premium Grade-A office space, 17 floors of the first and only Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Hotel in Malaysia, The View at 118, the highest Observation deck in Southeast Asia and is seamlessly connected to 118 Mall which will offer an exciting retail mix.

The development is linked by 4 acres of landscaped greenery and open spaces known as ‘Merdeka Boulevard at 118’. These assets sit adjacent to Malaysia’s two national landmarks – Stadium Negara and Stadium Merdeka – where the country’s independence was officially declared in 1957. This area, rich in history and culture, is set to offer a precinct with an inclusive vision of work and living in fully activated, well thought-out spaces for our community to be a part of.
