It’s an Ular-lar Chinese New Year at MR D.I.Y! Retailer premieres webfilm starring Benz Hui

 Malaysia’s favourite retailer, MR D.I.Y., is all set to usher in Chinese New Year with a playful twist, thanks to its newly launched festive campaign. Cheekily named “Ular-lar” in celebration of the Year of the Snake, the initiative features a wide array of exciting products, irresistible promotions, and a web film starring renowned Hong Kong actor Benz Hui.




The nearly eight-minute film, dubbed The Family Trial, is a heartwarming and humorous family drama set in a quirky courtroom-like setting. It follows a father-son feud over returning home for Chinese New Year, blending comical arguments with touching moments. The story takes a poignant turn as the son uncovers his father’s hidden illness, culminating in an emotional reunion dinner that celebrates the enduring strength of family bonds.


The web film has struck a chord with Malaysian audiences, amassing more than 11 million views across YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Xiaohongshu within days of its release.


Adding to the festive cheer, MR D.I.Y. has introduced its first-ever Chinese New Year dance-themed music video, “Ular-lar”, and is inviting Malaysians to showcase their creativity with a dance challenge on social media to win exciting prizes. Announcing MR D.I.Y’s Chinese New Year programme, MR D.I.Y. Group’s Head of Marketing, Alex Goh, said, “Chinese New Year is all about reuniting with family, friends and loved ones, often creating a spirit of fun and excitement - all very oooh-la-la!  MR D.I.Y is very much present in homes during this season, and we thought it would be fun to capture this spirit in a ‘Ular-lar’-themed programme, that brings together everything that people love about the season - visiting each other’s home, sharing good times with lots of food, and being entertained.  Our “Family Trial” webfilm, featuring Hong Kong Star Benz Hui Shiu-Hung and our ‘Ular-lar’ theme song and dance steps that Malaysians can dance along to, make it even more festive for everyone.”


MR D.I.Y has curated a series of fun Chinese New Year activities at its stores, while also keeping to its promise of ‘Always Low Prices’. 


“We aim to provide Malaysians with accessible and affordable festive essentials and a fun, enjoyable and rewarding shopping experience. It is all about adding value and making everyone happy,” added Goh. 


The retailer is rolling out 100 Chinese New Year essentials at selected stores nationwide. Look out for exciting events and activities at MR D.I.Y. PLUS at Mid Valley, KL,  IPC Shopping Centre, Selangor, and Mid Valley Southkey, Johor Bahru, and community outreach programmes at care homes across the country.
