Every Malaysian carries a collective generational memory ofrich local ingredients, shared laughter, and folklore passed down through generations. In this patriotic month, Luckin Coffee announced a seasonal patriotic collaboration with Kisah Bawah Tanah, Malaysia's first adult animation series by Animasia Studio, together weaving a meaningful Merdeka campaign themed "Rasa Kita, Cerita Kita" to celebrate Malaysian pride and identity.
Cerita Kita: A Story of Malaysian Pride
Unlike conventional animation, Kisah Bawah Tanah reimagines Malaysia's rich supernatural folklore by bringing together iconic legendary characters such as Pontianak, Pocong, Hantu Raya, Penanggal and many others. Rather than portraying them as fearsome figures, Kisah Bawah Tanah gave it a comedic twist, bringing each character to life through relatable everyday Malaysian situations. Developed over ten years, the homegrown series has achieved regional success, premiering its broadcast on Astro Malaysia and beginning its regional rollout starting in Thailand on the Boom channel. "Kisah Bawah Tanah was born from a deep love for Malaysian lore, especially those unforgettable tales so many of us grew up with. Beyond its creative storytelling, what truly resonated with us is the local talent and heart behind it, mirroring our commitment as a brand proudly operated entirely by Malaysians. This made Kisah Bawah Tanah the ideal partner to champion local pride during this patriotic month. Seeing these iconic characters step into Luckin Coffee stores is deeply rewarding, and we hope it brings a warm smile and nostalgic moment to our customers over a cup of coffee that feels uniquely Malaysian.", said Dr.Jeff Lim Chee Lip, Chief Executive Officer of Luckin Coffee Malaysia.
"When Kisah Bawah Tanah was born, we wanted to take our favorite local ghost stories and show the world just how cool Malaysian folklore can be. To see our characters jumping off the screen and into Luckin Coffee stores across the country is an absolute dream come true! Partnering with a global brand that shares our commitment to celebrating local talent makes this year’s Merdeka truly special. We hope this collaboration brings a spark of laughter, a touch of nostalgia, and a proud Malaysian smile to everyone grabbing their daily cup of coffee." saidHendra Wardi, Co-Creator of Kisah Bawah Tanah.

As part of the campaign, both brands produced four meaningful mini-episodes under the theme "Rasa Kita, Cerita Kita". Each episode shines a light on core Malaysian values: spirit, soul, resilience, and harmony. Featuring special appearances by fan-favorite Kisah Bawah Tanah characters like Sam, Zack, Ina, Tok Mart, Vincent, and Pocing, the series showcases how these characters unite to overcome challenges and celebrate togetherness through authentic local storytelling. The four episodes will be revealed on Luckin Coffee social media throughout the campaign period.
Rasa Kita: A twist of local flavours
Rolling out nationwide starting 14 August 2026, the campaign introduces a rotating menu of localized creations through August and September, launching first with the Gula Melaka Series. Infused with authentic caramelized palm sugar, this launch pays homage to a timeless flavor profile cherished across the nation:
● Gula Melaka Shakerato: Freshly shaken and served ice-cold, pairing a foamy espresso crown with a smooth coconut base and rich, decadent gula melaka layers.
● Gula Melaka Latte: A balanced daily cup where dark roast espresso meets smoky palm sugar for a comforting, subtly sweet finish.
To keep the campaign momentum going , Luckin Coffee will reveal two additional surprise seasonal flavor series in the coming weeks, continuing to honor local tastebuds throughout the Merdeka season.
To complete the experience, fans can bring a piece of this creative collaboration home with limited-edition Kisah Bawah Tanah merchandise. Blending playful character design with a spooky-chic aesthetic, the lineup features puffy stickers, umbrellas, and plushie tote bags. The merchandise will be available across all Luckin Coffee stores and via the Luckin Coffee mobile app starting 14 August 2026 for a limited time, while stocks last.
