Malaysia has set an ambitious direction for the future of its manufacturing sector through the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030). The focus on higher-value manufacturing, digitalisation and productivity reflects where the industry is heading. The next challenge, however, is not simply adopting more technology. It is ensuring manufacturers have the people, capabilities and operating models to make those investments deliver lasting results.

Over the past decade, automation, digital technologies and data have changed the way factories operate. They have improved productivity, strengthened quality and made manufacturing more responsive than ever before. But as these technologies become more widely adopted, they are no longer the defining advantage. Increasingly, the manufacturers that stand out are those that integrate technology into the way they work, develop their people alongside it and continue improving their operations over time.
One of the biggest misconceptions about modern manufacturing is that technology replaces people. In reality, it changes what people are expected to do. The role of today's manufacturing workforce extends well beyond operating machinery. People are expected to interpret data, solve problems, identify improvements and make faster decisions on the production floor. As manufacturing continues to evolve, developing these capabilities will be just as important as investing in new equipment.
This shift also changes how manufacturers think about investment. Buying new technology is often the easiest part. The harder work begins afterwards, when organisations need to build the skills, processes and mindset to make that technology part of everyday operations. That takes time, consistency and commitment. It is also where the greatest long-term gains are realised.
At Coca-Cola Bottlers Malaysia, we have experienced this evolution over the past 15 years at our Bandar Enstek manufacturing and distribution hub. As our operations have become more advanced, every investment in technology has also required us to strengthen the capabilities of our people and refine the way we operate. Our experience has reinforced a simple lesson. Technology creates opportunities, but people determine how much value those opportunities ultimately deliver.
A prime example is our Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), the first high-throughput, high-density solution of its kind within Coca-Cola in Southeast Asia. Beyond automating warehouse operations and providing real-time inventory visibility, the system has fundamentally changed how our teams plan production, manage inventory and coordinate warehouse movements. Rather than replacing people, it has shifted their focus towards system optimisation, data analysis and operational decision-making.
We have also accelerated our digital manufacturing journey by adopting Power BI as an integrated operational reporting platform. By consolidating production, maintenance, quality and utility data into a single source of truth, our teams can monitor plant performance in real time, identify losses swiftly and make faster, data-driven decisions. More importantly, it has strengthened collaboration across functions by enabling everyone to work from the same operational insights rather than isolated reports.
This thinking also extends beyond productivity. Today, manufacturers are expected to improve efficiency while using resources more responsibly and strengthening the resilience of their operations. These priorities are increasingly connected. Better manufacturing processes often reduce energy use, water consumption and waste because they are built around eliminating inefficiencies rather than simply increasing output.
In practice, sustainability has also become an outcome of operational excellence rather than a standalone initiative. We have successfully reduced electricity consumption by approximately 66,000 kWh per month while maintaining production performance. This was achieved through engineering optimisation projects, including improvements to our air handling units, compressors and chiller systems. Combined with onsite solar generation that now supplies around 30% of the plant's electricity demand, these initiatives demonstrate how operational improvements can simultaneously enhance competitiveness and reduce environmental impact.
Malaysia has built a strong manufacturing base over many decades. The opportunity now is to strengthen its position as a high-value manufacturing hub for the future. Achieving the ambitions set out under NIMP 2030 will require continued investment from both industry and government, but it will also require closer collaboration with education institutions to ensure the workforce keeps pace with the changing needs of manufacturing.
Technology will continue to evolve, and manufacturers will continue investing in it. The businesses that succeed, however, will not be those with the most advanced systems alone. They will be those that build the skills, ways of working and culture needed to turn technology into better decisions, stronger operations and sustainable growth. That is how Malaysia can continue strengthening its manufacturing sector and remain competitive in the years ahead.
