The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf "Save Bill" Campaign Raises RM 30,000 for Malaysian Nature Society Hornbill Conservation Programme
Over the 3-month campaign, customers responded generously with purchases of limited-edition Hornbill merchandise, activations of specially-designed Hornbill TCB cards and TCB card top-ups on Save Bill Days, with each kind gesture matched by a RM5 donation from CB&TL.
“This year, our ‘Save Bill’ campaign raised RM30,000 for the Malaysian Nature Society’s Hornbill Conservation Programme thanks to the generosity of our customers. It’s a privilege to have played a small role in this effort and we hope our campaign has touched many individuals to learn more about Malaysia’s iconic Hornbill and the future of its survival,” said Fiona Rodrigues, Director of Marketing & Development, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® Malaysia.
To shed more light on the programme, Yeap Chin Aik, Senior Conservation Officer cum Project Manager of the Malaysian Nature Society’s (MNS) hornbill conservation project, spoke to workshop participants about the various species found in Malaysia.
“Hornbills need a large habitat such as the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex to thrive, with sufficient food source and nesting areas to support a healthy population, hence habitat conservation is key,” said Yeap. “With greater awareness among the public and more support for preservation, which also supports a diverse biodiversity, we can ensure the survival of hornbills and many other species that are native to Malaysia.”
As part of the ‘Save Bill’ Campaign, four CB&TL employees had the chance to participate in the MNS Hornbill Volunteer Programme. The memorable experience, which included assisting MNS Orang Asli Hornbill Guardians in their monitoring and research activities was shared with workshop participants, ending with a sincere plea for more people to volunteer.
As a not-for-profit national non-governmental organisation, MNS welcomes volunteers and support from corporations to augment its many conservation and nature education programmes.
“As Malaysians we are blessed with amazing biodiversity and many diverse types of ecosystems, being one of the 12 mega-diverse countries in the world. Our indigenous peoples, such as the Orang Asli tribes of Peninsular Malaysia, have deep ancestral knowledge and appreciation for their forests. Working together with the Orang Asli communities in different parts of Peninsular Malaysia, MNS hopes to combine its conservation know-how with their forest knowledge to advocate for better protection for our species, forests and protected areas,” said I.S Shanmugaraj, Executive Director of the Malaysian Nature Society. “The ‘Save Bill’ Campaign is a great example of how corporations can play a significant role in spreading this message further so that more volunteers and companies will step forward as advocates. MNS is very grateful for the effort and support we have received from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® Malaysia, and the funds collected will go a long way towards MNS’s conservation efforts.”
